Inthis series, Alex Jaeger demonstrates his process for designing afuturistic military vehicle based on descriptions from a sciencefiction screenplay. In this second volume, with an emphasis on theproduction pipeline, he shows how to break down a three-quarter view ofa vehicle design into orthographic views for a 3D modeler, and thendemonstrates the process for rendering that three-quarter view into afinal presentation piece in Adobe Photoshop . Alex begins with the sideorthographic view, showing you exactly how to correctly measure andposition each element from your design. He leads you through hisworkflow to then create top, front, and back views, as well asalternates for on-road and off-road modes. Throughout theorthographic demo, Alex focuses on keeping the design accurate, wellorganized and easy for a 3D modeler to read. He then moves on torendering the three-quarter view in Photoshop, adding details to theline drawing and finishing with color, lighting, graphics,photo-textures, scale cues and atmosphere to present the vehicle in itsworld and bring the final design to life.

AlexJaeger studied automotive design at the College for Creative Studiesbut then turned to entertainment design studies at the Art Institute ofPittsburgh. Soon after graduation he was working in both the model shopand art department at Industrial Light and Magic. There he has servedas a visual effects art director for the past 15 years on projects suchas Star Trek: First Contact, Wild Wild West, Starship Troopers, DeepImpact, Galaxy Quest, Pearl Harbor, Star Wars: Return of the JediSpecial Edition, Star Wars: Episode 2, Star Wars: Episode 3,Transformers, Mission Impossible 3, Transformers 2: Revenge of theFallen and the most recent J.J. Abram's Star Trek. He's responsible forsuch designs as the Akira Class starship, Bumblebee's and Starscream'shead designs, the Clone Trooper variations and the future policeofficer's mask from Star Trek among many others.
